Grants
Pasold research grants are awarded to fund high quality research, relating to all branches of textile history. Applications are encouraged for projects where there will be a lasting outcome in the form of a publication or an exhibition or similar. This includes conservation related projects, leading to publications, but excludes the purchase or repair of objects and the purchase of hardware (eg cameras or computing equipment or computer software). Applications will also be considered where preliminary work is needed for the preparation of a more substantial grant application to one of the major funding bodies. Applications may also be made to fund conference attendance – these applications may come from individuals or from conference organisers seeking funding for a named applicant. However, it is important to provide an abstract of the paper and details of the nature of the conference and its significance. Where a conference organiser is seeking support for a named delegate details of the conference, a CV of the delegate and title and abstract of the paper are required. A copy of the full paper should be supplied following the conference.
All successful grant applicants, where appropriate, will be encouraged to consider submitting the outcome of their research to Textile History. Grants specifically in aid of publication, for contributions towards illustrations essential to the quality of research output, will be considered where a clear case is made explaining the way these will enhance the text and why they cannot be funded in other ways.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PASOLD RESEARCH FUND WILL NOT FUND SALARIES, ONLY RESEARCH EXPENSES SUCH AS TRAVEL, SUBSISTENCE, PHOTOCOPYING, MICROFILMING AND SIMILAR. WE NO LONGER ACCEPT RETROSPECTIVE APPLICATIONS. ALL COSTINGS MUST BE IN STERLING

DETAILS AND DEADLINES FOR RESEARCH GRANTS(please note that some deadlines were revised in January 2008)
1 Applications for grants under £300 may be made at any time. 4 copies please.
2 There are two deadlines for applications between £301 and £1000: 1 October and 15 February. Applicants will be notified of decisions within 3 months. Applicants should supply 4 copies of their full application including form, CV and any accompanying papers.
3 For applications between £1001 and £3000 there is a single application date of 30 April. Applicants will be notified within 3 months. Applicants should supply 5 copies of their full application including form, CV and any accompanying papers.
4. Research Grant applications are welcomed from PhD students, registered at UK institutions, for grants up to £1000. These must be accompanied by a sealed letter of recommendation from the supervisor(s). A case should be made that explains why such research expenses were not included in institutional or research council funding. Applications from PhD students for amounts over £1000 can ONLY be made under the PhD Bursary scheme (see below).

5 There is a category of small grants of up to £500 for students on MA programmes. The deadline is 15 April.

THE CRITERIA APPLIED IN JUDGING RESEARCH GRANT APPLICATIONS, which can be in ANY area of the history of textiles including multidisciplinary approaches, are as follows:
1 Originality and rigour of the research, especially where the study of the history of textiles is being approached from a new angle, using new sources or new methodology. You must demonstrate that the history of textiles is the central area of concern and study..
2 The care given to laying out of objectives and design of the research.
3 The viability of the research within the timescale laid out and the research training or experience of the applicant.
4 The contribution of the research in terms of publications, the development of web based materials, exhibitions or similar
5 Referees’ reports (at least one nominated referee should be from outside the applicant's own institution).

SOME REASONS WHY WE TURN RESEARCH GRANTS DOWN (also see at end of grants section for a list of successful grant applications in recent years)
Competition for our grants has grown significantly in the last few years. We are sometimes surprised by the poor presentation of applications. We thought it would help applicants to know the most common reasons for grants being turned down:
1 Applications in which the history of textiles is peripheral and not central to research.
2 Applications which fail to convey the scope and significance of the research and its wider contribution . If it is necessary for applicants to write at length they should not confine themselves to the short space on the form- you are invited to use a continuation sheet. Many applicants ignore this.
3 Applications where the costings are incomplete, inaccurate, do not give totals and sub-totals, are not in £ sterling or where you have not investigated the cheapest method of transport.
4 Applications for travel to conferences which do not provide an abstract of the paper or the significance of the conference – a title is not enough.
5 Carelessly prepared applications.

MA Grants; DEADLINE 15 April
The Pasold Research Fund offers a limited number of grants for students on MA courses at UK universities, who are working in any field of textile history. Grants of up to £500 in value may be awarded.    Since the Pasold Research Fund's remit is the history of textiles it is important that the focus of applications is in this area which includes: dress, fashion, conservation, economic, social and cultural history of textiles and clothing, history of textile technology.

Students may apply for support for such items as travel, photocopying or reproduction of illustrations to be used in their dissertation, but not for purchase of computer software or hardware or any artefacts.

Students should apply by post or email - 4 copies should be supplied if applying by post.   Applications should be accompanied by a supporting letter from their supervisor and in addition the name and contact details of one referee. In preparing applications it is vital to provide:

  • An overview of the proposed research, showing how it relates to wider literature, research techniques to be used, and the significance of the proposed research
  • A detailed breakdown of costings

Please use the standard research grant form and mark it clearly 'MA Application'. If you need further guidance please contact Pat Hudson hudsonp@cardiff.ac.uk

Raine Grants
These grants are to assist museum staff in the UK (or those working under the auspices of a UK museum) in research into the history of decorated textiles. Applications should relate to the study of the history of flat textiles only and should exclude costume history and economic and social history except where these subjects are directly connected with the decoration of flat textiles. Applications can be made at any time.

K.G. Ponting Memorial Bursaries
Since 1984 the Pasold Research Fund has funded a number of bursaries in memory of the late Kenneth Ponting to enable students to study the collections at the Museum of Costume and Fashion Research Centre in Bath.
Kenneth Ponting, a former Director of the Fund and AN authority on the wool textile industry lived in Bath and took an active interest in the museum and its Research Centre. He was also eager to promote the serious study of both the history of textiles and the history of dress. It is felt that there are a number of students studying these subjects who would benefit from a short visit to Bath to use the collections but who may be unable to find the costs of travel and subsistence. A number of bursaries up to a maximum of £250 each are available and applications are normally invited in the autumn of each year.
For further details and an application form contact:
The Curator, Museum of Costume & Fashion Research Centre, 4 Circus, BATH, Somerset BA1 2EW.
Telephone: 01225 477752. Fax: 01225 444793

Grants in aid of publication
This category of grant was introduced in 2007. The aim is to subsidise the publication of essential illustrative material in high quality research, particularly in research monographs. Grants will normally have a ceiling of £1,000.

Applicants should use the generic research grants form (below) but must ensure that they provide a full listing and description of the illustrative material, its source and the documented costs of obtaining the material for publication. A detailed description of the nature and content of the research monograph or other output must also be included.

Applications may be made at any time.

PASOLD RESEARCH FUND PhD BURSARIES FOR TEXTILE HISTORY

Applications are invited from postgraduate students at UK institutions for PhD bursaries of up to £2,500, to support their research which may take the form of a subsidy for fees or direct research costs in any area or period of textile history. the bursaries can be used for such purposes as conference attendance, securing visual materials, extra travel or research expenses or to support students when a dissertation is close to completion. Students in the first year of their PhD are NOT eligible for these awards, which will normally be for one year, with the opportunity to renew for a second year. The Pasold Research Fund offers support for a MAXIMUM of two years, with priority being given to those applications where it is demonstrated that the bursary will enable the student to complete a PhD. If candidates have applied before and were turned down they ARE eligible to re-apply. If you have further queries as to whether you are eligible or about the type of support do please e-mail Hudsonp@cf.ac.uk.
All applicants should supply 6 copies of their application form containing details of their PhD research and their curriculum vitae. These should be accompanied by a letter of support from their supervisor. The letter of support should be in a sealed envelope labelled with the candidate’s name and signed across the seal by the supervisor. In addition to an academic assessment of the proposal and the likelihood of a satisfactory completion of the doctorate, the supervisor's letter should give an indication of other sources of support obtained and the importance of support to the viability of the project. In addition, candidates should supply the name and address of one further referee.
Where applicants wish to renew for a second year of support, this will be subject to satisfactory progress in year one of the award evidenced by a detailed report from the supervisor and one from the student at the end of the first year of the award.
Applications for travel, photocopying and similar must demonstrate clearly the way in which their PhD research will benefit from the grant and why it cannot be funded from other sources.
When completing the form please be careful to apply for no more than the upper limit of £2,500 and give detailed breakdown of anticipated costs.
Please note that the Fund is unable to finance the purchase of equipment or computer software.

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS 30 June each year: 6 copies
Applicants will be notified of the outcome by 15 August. in the year of application.
Please note that the Fund can only process applications where 6 copies of the application, and CV have been supplied. Only a single copy of the supervisor reference is required.
